August 2024 Blog Post: Soaking Up the Last Rays of Summer- Care Tips for Your Houseplants and You

Hello, Plant Besties!

As the end of summer draws near, it's time to soak up the last few weeks of sunshine before the fall season sneaks up on us. For both us and our beloved houseplants, these final months of the summer solstice are crucial for soaking in as much of that golden light as possible.

Sunshine for Your Plants: Making the Most of Summer's End

The summer sun is a vital source of energy for your houseplants, and with the solstice sun still strong, it’s essential to ensure your green friends are getting all the light they need. Here’s how to help your plants thrive in these final sunny months:

1. Optimize Sun Exposure: As the days start to get shorter, make sure your plants are still receiving plenty of sunlight. Move them closer to windows where they can soak up direct light or consider placing them outside for a few hours each day (just be mindful of temperature changes and avoid harsh midday sun for sensitive plants).

2. Adjust Watering Routines: With the summer heat still lingering, your plants may need more frequent watering. However, as temperatures start to cool, begin transitioning to your fall watering schedule. Always check the soil moisture before watering to avoid overwatering.

3. Fertilize Before Fall: If you haven’t done so already, give your plants a final dose of fertilizer to boost their growth and prepare them for the slower months ahead. Choose a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer and follow the recommended dosage for your specific plant types.

4. Monitor for Pests: The end of summer can bring about an increase in pests. Keep a close eye on your plants and treat any infestations promptly with natural remedies or insecticidal soap.

Embrace the Outdoors: Last-Minute Summer Activities

While we’re preparing our plants for the transition into fall, let’s not forget to enjoy the sunshine ourselves! Here are some ideas to make the most of the last few weeks of summer:

1. Outdoor Gatherings : Grab a blanket, pack some snacks, and head to a local park for a relaxing time outdoor. It's a great way to connect with nature and soak up some Vitamin D.

2. Gardening Projects: Consider starting an outdoor garden project, like creating a small herb garden or a butterfly-friendly flower bed. It’s a fun way to extend your love of plants into the great outdoors.

3. Nature Walks: Take a stroll through a nearby nature reserve or botanical garden. It’s a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the late summer blooms and get inspired for your indoor plant collection.

4. Sunset Watching: There’s something magical about summer sunsets. Take some time to watch the sun dip below the horizon, either from your own backyard or a scenic spot in your area.
